Who We Are
GBF’s Water Protection Team unites trained volunteers, community members, and mission-driven partners to safeguard the waters of Galveston Bay.
This work is rooted in science, stewardship, and public engagement. You will find Water Protection volunteers monitoring water quality, reducing marine debris, and engaging the public about collecting water through our rain barrel program.
What We Do
Water Quality Monitoring
Certified volunteers collect monthly environmental data including temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, water clarity, and more at monitoring sites throughout the Galveston Bay watershed.
This long-term citizen science effort provides valuable data that supports watershed management, informs public awareness tools, and strengthens our collective understanding of Bay health.
Become a Certified Water Monitor
Ready to support science-based stewardship? You can learn about certification requirements, open monitoring sites, and training pathways on our Water Quality Monitoring page.
Rain Barrel Workshops
With support from GBF Dedicated Volunteers, our Rain Barrel Workshops help community members conserve freshwater resources while reducing stormwater runoff and bacterial pollution entering Galveston Bay.
Each installed rain barrel can save approximately 1,050 gallons of water annually, offering practical, community-based solutions that protect both households and ecosystems.

Marine Debris & Litter Reduction
Through shoreline cleanups, marine debris surveys, and pollution prevention initiatives, volunteers actively reduce harmful waste before it can impact Bay habitats and wildlife.
Whether participating in community cleanup events or supporting scientific debris tracking, volunteers help address both immediate threats and long-term environmental challenges facing Galveston Bay.
