Join Moody Gardens and Galveston Bay Foundation in an exciting hands-on project to protect our shoreline and restore marine habitat. Volunteers will use recycled oyster shells collected through GBF’s Oyster Shell Recycling Program, to build a new oyster reef that reduces erosion and supports marine life in Galveston Bay.
Why it matters: Oyster reefs protect shorelines, improve water quality, and provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife. By helping build this reef, you are directly contributing to the health of Galveston Bay.
What you will do:
- Transporting the filled bags from the parking lot to the worksite via golf carts.
- Moving the bags from the golf cart to the volunteers in the water to stack bags.
- Getting in the water to stack bags and creating the reef.
- All supplies will be provided, including gloves.
- Please bring a reusable water bottle, a change of clothes, and a towel.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting wet and dirty. Preferably moisture wicking shirt and pants.
We will provide all supplies needed and on-site guidance and safety.
Workdays will be from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM for the following dates:
-
Thursday, October 2nd
-
Friday, October 10th
-
Tuesday, October 14th
