Build the Bay, one shell bag at a time.
Join Moody Gardens and GBF to create oyster shell bags that will be used to build living reef habitat and help reduce shoreline erosion. We’ll be using recycled shells collected through GBF’s Oyster Shell Recycling Program.
As an Oyster Shell Bagging Volunteer, you will work in small teams (2–3 people) to prepare oyster shell bags for reef construction.
You will work with your team to:
- Fill and secure oyster shell bags (approximately 30 lbs each)
- Working across teams to keep the process moving smoothly
- Load, unload, and organize supplies as needed
Shift time: 8:45 AM-12:00 PM
Available workdays:
- Tuesday, February 17th
- Thursday, February 19th
- Monday, March 2nd
- Tuesday, March 3rd
- Wednesday, March 4th
- Thursday, March 5th
- Friday, March 6th
All supplies will be provided (including gloves).
Restrooms are available onsite at Moody Gardens.
Expect to be on your feet and working hands-on with shells and bags in the sun. Prepare to get dirty!
By bagging recycled shell for reef building, you help create living habitat that supports cleaner water and a healthier Galveston Bay.
