GBF Volunteer Heat Safety Guidelines
When volunteering outdoors, heat safety is essential. Use the guidance below to stay safe, support your team, and ensure a positive experience while volunteering.
5 Key Heat Safety Practices
| 1. | Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses (preferably polarized). |
| 2. | Hydrate with water early and often. |
| 3. | Take frequent breaks. |
| 4. | Check in with your team and remind each other to drink water. |
| 5. | Maintain your heat acclimatization so you are prepared for your monthly shift. |
Take care of yourself and each other. Practice these heat safety measures and remind fellow volunteers to do the same.
Heat Acclimatization Example Schedule (1 Week)
Acclimatization helps your body adapt to heat. Gradually increasing your time outdoors is one of the best ways to prevent heat illness and stay safe during your shift.
| Day | Outdoor Duration |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | 0.8 hours (48 minutes) |
| Day 2 | 1.6 hours (96 minutes) |
| Day 3 | 2.4 hours (144 minutes) |
| Day 4 | 3.2 hours (192 minutes) |
| Day 5 | 4.0 hours (240 minutes) |
| Day 6 | 4.0 hours (240 minutes) |
| Day 7 | Rest or light activity |
Important Notes:
- Please do not push yourself beyond your limits.
- Air conditioning does not cancel out your total time spent outdoors.
- Take breaks as needed, especially during acclimatization periods.
